The Process, Step by Step

The seven steps below are the general course of an international funeral repatriation. For each step you can see which information and documents are needed and how long it usually takes.

  1. 1

    First call and information

When you call, we ask where the death occurred, the nationality of the deceased and where the deceased is to be taken. In the same call we explain the process and the estimated time.

    What you provide
Place of death, the deceased's ID or passport details, phone number of the relative we should contact
    Estimated time
    Same day
  2. 2

    Death certificate and official procedures

The death certificate is obtained from the hospital or the municipal physician. If the case is judicial, the prosecutor's procedure and, where required, the autopsy are followed up.

    What you provide
The deceased's ID card or passport
    Estimated time
Usually 1 day; longer if there is a judicial procedure
  3. 3

Collection of the deceased and cold chain

The deceased is collected from the place of death in our refrigerated vehicle and taken to the mortuary to be prepared for transfer.

    What you provide
Proof of kinship or a power of attorney authorising release
    Estimated time
Same day, once the certificate is ready
  4. 4

    Preparation: washing, embalming, coffin

Washing and shrouding are carried out according to the deceased's faith and denomination. Embalming is performed for international transfer and a sealed coffin suitable for air transport is prepared.

    What you provide
Brief information on the family's religious preferences
    Estimated time
    Usually 1 day
  5. 5

    Consular and transfer documents

The multilingual death certificate extract (Formule C), burial transit permit, embalming certificate and the consular approval of the destination country are obtained.

    What you provide
Power of attorney if required; details of the person receiving the deceased in the destination country
    Estimated time
Usually 1-3 working days; depends on the consulate
  6. 6

    Airline booking and customs

The cargo booking is made through an IATA-accredited agent, the air waybill is issued and customs clearance is completed. If an accompanying relative needs a ticket, we can help.

    What you provide
Destination airport and details of the receiving funeral director or person
    Estimated time
1-2 days, depending on flight availability
  7. 7

    Handover and burial coordination

At the destination airport the deceased is handed over to the person or funeral director appointed by the family. For arrivals in Turkey, we coordinate the burial place and the municipal procedures.

    What you provide
    Preferred burial place
    Estimated time
    Day of arrival

The times given are typical ranges; they can change depending on how quickly the authorities, the airline and the consulate process each step. An autopsy, a judicial procedure or a public holiday will extend them.
