Funeral Repatriation from Abroad to Turkey
If you want to bring a relative who has died abroad to Turkey, we coordinate both ends: we correspond with the funeral director or the Turkish consulate in the country of death, receive the deceased in Istanbul, transfer them to the city of burial and handle the municipal procedures.
What happens
- We contact the funeral director, funeral fund or insurer in the country of death.
- We follow up the Turkish consulate's transfer documents and the paperwork required for entry into Turkey.
- We receive the deceased at Istanbul Airport and complete customs clearance.
- We transfer the deceased to the city of burial in a refrigerated vehicle and coordinate the municipal cemetery procedures.
- If the family wishes, we help arrange the funeral prayer and the burial.
What we need from you
- The deceased's Turkish ID card or passport, and the death certificate issued in the country of death
- Contact details of the funeral director, insurer or funeral fund in the country of death (if any)
- City of burial and preferred cemetery
- Details of the relative who will receive the deceased in Turkey
How long it takes
Once the procedures in the country of death are complete, collection, transfer and burial in Turkey usually take 1-2 days. The time needed abroad varies by country.
The times given are typical ranges; they can change depending on how quickly the authorities, the airline and the consulate process each step. An autopsy, a judicial procedure or a public holiday will extend them.
Funeral funds and insurance
Families living in Europe are often members of a funeral fund or covered by insurance. In that case the fund's contracted funeral director carries out the transfer as far as Turkey; we take over from the airport with collection, domestic transfer and burial. We check the cover together.
Costs are usually covered by the family, an insurer or the funeral fund the deceased belonged to. We check the cover together in the first call; a written quote is free of charge.
