Documents and Consular Procedures
Documents are the most time-consuming part of international funeral repatriation. The lists below give the general framework; additional documents may be required depending on the destination country. In the first call we draw up the list that applies to your case.
For a deceased leaving Turkey
- Death certificate (issued by the hospital or the municipal physician; can be verified via e-Devlet)
- Multilingual death certificate extract (Formule C), obtained from the civil registry office
- Burial transit permit, issued by the municipality
- Embalming certificate
- Sealed coffin report
- Transfer approval from the destination country's consulate (varies by country)
- Air waybill (AWB), issued by the airline's cargo department
- Burial permit from the prosecutor's office in judicial cases
For a deceased arriving in Turkey
- Death certificate issued in the country of death, with translation
- Transfer document from the Turkish consulate
- Embalming certificate and sealed coffin certificate
- Air waybill
- Municipal permit for burial in Turkey
The consular process
Turkey is a party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses. For countries that are party to the agreement, the mortuary passport (laissez-passer) is the governing document; for other countries, the rules of the relevant consulate apply. We handle the consular appointment, fees and translations.
Points to know
Where death was caused by certain infectious diseases such as cholera, plague, smallpox, anthrax, leprosy or glanders, transfer is not permitted for one year under Turkish regulations.
Cremation is not available in Turkey.
If a power of attorney is needed, we arrange the notary appointment; relatives abroad can also grant one at a Turkish consulate.
