Funeral Repatriation Cost Guide

There is no single price for funeral repatriation; the total depends on the destination country, the airline cargo charge, consular fees and the type of coffin. This page is intended to help you understand what you will be paying for before you request a quote. The first call and the written quote are free of charge.

What determines the price

  1. 1

    Airline cargo charge

Set by the airline according to the destination country, the flight route and the total weight including the coffin. It is the largest and most variable item in the total cost and is shown separately in the quote.

  2. 2

    Embalming and preparation

The embalming required for international transport, ritual washing and shrouding, and the embalming certificate.

  3. 3

    Sealed coffin

A zinc-lined, soldered international transport coffin and the air cargo crate. The type of coffin depends on the family's wishes and the rules of the destination country.

  4. 4

    Official documents and consulate

The multilingual death certificate extract (Formule C), the burial transit permit, translation, notary and consular fees. Fee amounts vary by country.

  5. 5

    Domestic transfer

Transfer in a refrigerated vehicle from the place of death to Istanbul, or from the airport to the city of burial; calculated by distance.

  6. 6

    Services in the destination country

Collection at the airport, the local funeral director, cemetery and burial fees; these are priced by the funeral director in the destination country and are not included in our quote.

Who pays?

  • If there is travel insurance, health insurance or an assistance policy, the cost of repatriation is usually covered; we correspond directly with the insurer.
  • Families living in Europe are usually members of a funeral fund; the fund carries out the transfer as far as Turkey through its contracted funeral director.
  • If there is no insurance or fund, the costs are met by the family. Payment is taken after the written quote has been approved, and is documented.
  • There is no general arrangement for free state repatriation of citizens who die abroad; consulates give guidance but do not cover the cost.
