Austria - Turkey Funeral Repatriation
We bring home and bury the deceased for Turkish families living in Austria, and repatriate residents of Austria who die in Turkey. The funeral fund or insurer in Austria usually carries out the transfer as far as Turkey; we take over the process from the airport. Turkey and Austria are both party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses.
Process for this country
- From Austria to Turkey: we exchange flight and document details with the funeral director or fund in Austria; we receive the deceased in Istanbul, transfer them to the city and coordinate the burial.
- From Turkey to Austria: the death certificate, the multilingual death certificate extract (Formule C), the embalming certificate and the burial transit permit are issued; a handover plan is agreed with the funeral director in Austria and the deceased is sent by air cargo.

- For a deceased arriving from Austria: the Austrian death certificate (Sterbeurkunde) and the Turkish consulate's transfer document
- For a deceased leaving Turkey: Formule C, embalming certificate, burial transit permit and a letter of acceptance from the funeral director in Austria
Points to note
If there is a funeral fund membership in Austria, call the fund first; its contracted funeral director starts the transfer. We handle the domestic transfer and burial that fall outside the cover.
There are direct flights from Vienna to Istanbul; the handover time and the document list are shared in advance with the funeral director in Austria.
The times given are typical ranges; they can change depending on how quickly the authorities, the airline and the consulate process each step. An autopsy, a judicial procedure or a public holiday will extend them.
