United Kingdom - Turkey Funeral Repatriation

We repatriate British nationals who die in Turkey on holiday or during medical treatment, and bring relatives who die in the United Kingdom to Turkey. Travel insurance often covers the cost of repatriation; we correspond directly with the insurer and assistance company.

Process for this country

  • From Turkey to the United Kingdom: the death certificate and the multilingual death certificate extract (Formule C) are issued, embalming is performed, a sealed coffin is prepared, the necessary correspondence with the British consulate is completed and the deceased is sent by air cargo.
  • From the United Kingdom to Turkey: documents and the flight plan are agreed with the funeral director there; we receive the deceased in Istanbul and coordinate the transfer and burial.

Documents

  • Death certificate issued in Turkey, with English translation
  • Formule C, embalming certificate, sealed coffin report, burial transit permit
  • Approval from the insurer or assistance company (if applicable)

Points to note

A funeral director in the United Kingdom must be appointed to receive the deceased; if you wish, we identify one together with your insurer.

The British Embassy publishes guidance on what to do after a death in Turkey; we follow that guidance.

The times given are typical ranges; they can change depending on how quickly the authorities, the airline and the consulate process each step. An autopsy, a judicial procedure or a public holiday will extend them.
