Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia - Turkey Funeral Repatriation
There is considerable travel between Saudi Arabia and Turkey for Hajj, Umrah, work and visits. Those who die during Hajj or Umrah are usually buried there; when the family asks for repatriation to Turkey, the process is carried out with the Saudi authorities and the Turkish consulate. We cover bringing Turkish citizens who work or live in Saudi Arabia back to Turkey, and repatriating Saudi nationals who die in Turkey to Jeddah, Riyadh and other cities.
Process for this country
- From Saudi Arabia to Turkey: the documents and flight plan are arranged with the funeral director, employer or relative there; the Turkish consulate's transfer document is obtained. We receive the deceased in Istanbul, transfer them to the city and coordinate the burial.
- From Turkey to Saudi Arabia: the death certificate and the multilingual death certificate extract (Formule C) are issued; the Saudi consulate's transfer documents are obtained. Ritual washing, shrouding and embalming are carried out, a sealed coffin is prepared and the deceased is sent by air cargo to Jeddah or Riyadh.
Documents
- The deceased's passport
- Death certificate and Formule C
- Embalming certificate, sealed coffin certificate, burial transit permit
- Consular transfer document
Points to note
If repatriation to Turkey is requested for someone who dies during Hajj or Umrah, contact is made with the group leader and the Turkish consulate; what is possible depends on the decision of the local authorities.
There are direct flights from Istanbul to Jeddah and Riyadh; for other cities the flight options vary by city.
The times given are typical ranges; they can change depending on how quickly the authorities, the airline and the consulate process each step. An autopsy, a judicial procedure or a public holiday will extend them.
