Belgium - Turkey Funeral Repatriation

We bring home and bury the deceased for Turkish families living in Belgium, and repatriate residents of Belgium who die in Turkey. The funeral fund or insurer in Belgium usually carries out the transfer as far as Turkey; we take over the process from the airport. Turkey and Belgium are both party to the 1973 Strasbourg Agreement on the transfer of corpses.

Process for this country

  • From Belgium to Turkey: we exchange flight and document details with the funeral director or fund in Belgium; we receive the deceased in Istanbul, transfer them to the city and coordinate the burial.
  • From Turkey to Belgium: the death certificate, the multilingual death certificate extract (Formule C), the embalming certificate and the burial transit permit are issued; a handover plan is agreed with the funeral director in Belgium and the deceased is sent by air cargo.

Documents

  • For a deceased arriving from Belgium: the Belgian death certificate and the Turkish consulate's transfer document
  • For a deceased leaving Turkey: Formule C, embalming certificate, burial transit permit and a letter of acceptance from the funeral director in Belgium

Points to note

If there is a funeral fund membership in Belgium, call the fund first; its contracted funeral director starts the transfer. We handle the domestic transfer and burial that fall outside the cover.

We work together with Turkish funeral directors in Belgium; we act as the single point of contact for airport handover and burial.

The times given are typical ranges; they can change depending on how quickly the authorities, the airline and the consulate process each step. An autopsy, a judicial procedure or a public holiday will extend them.
